Six-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has stated that he is not about to boycott this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps Circuit. Many sports teams and individual athletes in professional basketball, soccer, hockey and tennis leagues in the United States have boycotted participating in games and halted their sporting activities. This comes in protest of the latest episode of racial injustice being perpetuated on African Americans in the United States after the shooting of Jacob Blake by police officers in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

As the only black driver in Formula 1, Hamilton has been very vocal and active in supporting the Black Lives Matter Movement and other racial justice endeavors and has used his enormous fame and Social Media ubiquity to promote his cause. Hamilton has also been spearheading a movement to create a diversity council in Formula 1. As expected, he is in full support of his fellow athletes in the Unites States and their boycotting of sporting events. However, Hamilton stated that similar boycott measures in Europe will not achieve the same goals at present.
At a news conference in Belgium on Thursday, Hamilton commented that he thought it was “incredible what many out there in the States are doing within their sports. So many people are standing with the players and really pushing for change,” The current Mercedes driver and Championship points leader continued: “But that is in America and I don’t know if me doing anything here will particularly help … we’re in Belgium, we’re not in the United States.”
Lewis Hamilton has done more than just pay lip service to his adopted cause with his actions, both as a Formula 1 star and a private person and this reflects his enormous passion on the subject. However, he will likely not be able to encourage a wholesale boycott of an F1 race in Europe on his own, and missing out on precious championship points when you’re the leader probably does not make a ton of sense. Surely, at least in Lewis’ opinion, there must be better ways to fight the status quo.
