After a house, the second most important and expensive purchase that an individual would normally make in his lifetime is buying a car, and reasonably because of its cost to acquire is understandably treated with care and respect befitting what one can consider as a member of the family and not just a mode transport.

In an even more particular example of the long term relationship of owners with their cars are those of enthusiasts and how they keep, maintain, and modify their rides, more so if the car is expensive, a classic or generally worth a lot of money. As seen from how their cars look, this dedication is not a small feat considering the amount of time, money, and effort they spend to keep their vehicles in great condition.

With the affinity of people with their automobiles, it is somewhat surprising that there are cars that have ended up neglected, forgotten, or literally abandoned for a myriad of reasons by their owners. In this article, we look at some of these once majestic muscle cars that are now depressing hunks of immobile and abandoned metal.

9 Z28 Camaro

For the second edition of the Camaro, a sportier version called the Z28 was created, offering higher performance specs. Launched in 1970, this iteration of the beloved Chevy classic was in production until 1981.

As the top of the line version, the 1978 Z28 had a 188Hp powerplant mated to either a 3-speed automatic or 4-speed manual. No longer the head turner it was during its heyday, the Z28 pictured above is a sad example of how a once prime car has been neglected and forgotten.

8 1967 Mustang

With 10 million Mustangs made, this iconic Ford muscle car is one of the most prolific American cars ever made. The original pony car, Ford was able to create a sporty and appealing car that appealed because of its styling a respectable that made it a success.

This high production run though is probably the reason why despite its collectible status and value, many have been abandoned. In the above photo, a late white 60s Mustang can be seen languishing in a sorry state among a row of other vintage cars.

7 2nd Generation Camaro

Described by GM engineers who built it as “more of a driver’s car than the earlier version”, the second-generation Camaro was also called the “Super Hugger” as a description of its handling and road-hugging ability.

A total revamp of its predecessor, Chevrolet made substantial improvements to the car to better compete with its direct rival, the Mustang. In the example above, the blue Camaro seems to be in relatively decent shape and could be an ideal restoration project owing to its fair, despite being abandoned condition
