The U.S. Navy’s Freedom-class littoral combat ship, the USS St. Louis or LCS 19, was commissioned on the 8th of August and is now the newest addition to the U.S. Navy’s combat fleet. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic were felt across the military and during the commissioning ceremony, as sadly the event had to be a private affair, due to the current restrictions on large public gatherings.

The current USS St. Louis is the first ship to bear the name in nearly 200 years, and it is actually the seventh ship in the U.S. Navy to bear the St. Louis name. The Littoral combat ship program consists of two classes of relatively small vessels, that are designed primarily for operations near the shore. The two classes of Littoral combat ships are the Freedom-class, like the St. Louis, and the Independence Class. Their size is between that of the Oliver Hazard Perry frigate class ships, and the Cyclone class patrol boats, the latter of which are larger than and the former are smaller.

The keel of the St. Louis was laid down on the 17th of May 2017, so it has taken just over three years to complete the Navy vessel. She will be assigned to Littoral Combat Ship Squadron Two once fully in service with the US Navy. Her motto is “Gateway to Freedom” and the vessel was built in Marinette, Wisconsin.

Rear Admiral Brad Cooper II, Commander of the Naval Surface Force Atlantic, said “St. Louis brings speed and agility to the fleet. Congratulations to St. Louis’ captain and crew for all of your hard work to reach this milestone. You join a proud Surface Force that controls the seas and provides the Nation with naval combat power when and where needed.”
The fast and agile littoral ships will be perfect for countering diesel submarine threats, mine threats, and surface threats. They are incredibly flexible operationally, and the USS St. Louis will further enhance the capabilities of the US Navy.
