Cars are a product of their time, this is only a natural result of the ever-evolving nature of the auto industry. With countless trends to keep on top of, carmakers change their styling cues every couple of years, introducing facelifts that keep their cars looking modern and ahead of the styling curve, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.
But overall, each decade has its own distinct styling method and design language, letting cars from each time period be easily identified as products of their era. An ’80s wedge car will always be distinctly ’80s, much like the curvy, flowing style defines cars of the 2020s.
But this is not an absolute rule, and plenty of manufacturers can, and do, design a car that still looks new over a decade later. While vintage cars (defined as 25 years old or more) will always be identifiable as vintage, cars that are old, but haven’t hit vintage status yet can be seen as ahead of their time, predicting modern styling trends so well, or have a distinct style that remains unique to this day, that most people will think they’re brand new.
So read on, to see 10 cars that are at least 15 years old, but look like they could be sold new in showrooms.
10 2005 Alfa Romeo Brera
Via Autocar
Introduced in 2005, the Alfa Romeo Brera was a gorgeous sports coupe that we unfortunately never got in North America.
via Glory4cars
Developing a respectable 260 HP, the 2006 Alfa Romeo Brera is relatively quick, and quite sporty. But, sporty characteristics aside, the Brera outshines nearly every car it competed with when compared against modern car styling. Designed by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro, the Brera has aged incredibly for a 15-year-old car. Let alone looking modern today, the Brera’s sleek and stylish form looks better and newer than most actual new cars today.
9 2005 Porsche 911 Carrera
Via Bring a Trailer
Beginning in 2005, the Porsche 911 ditched its egg-yolk headlights previously found on the 996 generation and updated the car into the 997 generation.
via Top Speed
Sticking to the mantra of “evolution rather than revolution,” Porsche puts in subtle changes to the 911 when updating it, rather than changing the car entirely. Thanks to this philosophy, every generation of Carrera is easily identifiable as such, with differences in the generation being minor compared to other cars. As a result: at first glance, there’s no real way to tell that a 2005 997 is a 15-year-old car.
8 2001 Lotus Elise
via The Drive
When you reach the pinnacle of a unique design philosophy, not much change is needed to stay modern. A fine example of that is the Lotus Elise. Designed to be the ultimate lightweight track-ready sports car, the Lotus Elise is nearly timeless.
