No, this isn’t a Skyborg drone being flight-tested by the United States Air Force. It’s actually a groundbreaking passenger aircraft boasting unprecedented fuel efficiency. This is Otto Aviation’s Celera 500L, which is touted as the future of private flight. What is this new plane and how can it change future air travel? Let’s find out.

By design, the Celera 500L isn’t a conventional custom-made private jet. It uses extensive laminar flow, which Otto Aviation defines as the minimum drag solution for aircraft surfaces featuring smooth airflow layers with little to no adjacent layers. By employing laminar flow over the Celera 500L’s fuselage, wings, and tail surfaces – and deleting the usual plane windows – drag is cut by around 59% compared to a similarly sized plane.

In return, laminar flow allows the Celera 500L to achieve superior aerodynamics, speed as well as fuel efficiency. Whereas a similarly sized plane returns up to three miles per gallon, Celera 500L’s fuel economy is pegged at between 18 and 25 mpg! This gives the uniquely shaped aircraft to fly more than 4,500 miles, with a max cruise speed of 450 mph.

Because of its fuel-efficient nature, the Celera 500L offers an hourly operating cost of just $328, compared to around $2,100 of a similarly sized jet. Private plane operators would love this plane due to its low operating cost, which in turn could result in lower fares for passengers. This new aircraft could also be used for cargo transit or military missions.

With a cabin volume of 448 cubic feet, the Celera 500L is as spacious as a midsize jet. Furthermore, it offers a roomy, stand-up cabin complete with six first-class seats and bathroom. With a range of 4,500 miles, the aircraft can fly from coast to coast in the U.S. without having to stop and refuel in between.

Otto Aviation assured us that this plane isn’t a dream. In fact, the company has already built a full-scale prototype with 31 successful test flights to boot. With seven patents employed on this aircraft, Otto Aviation is focused on bringing the Celera 500L to market.
