The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) was a short-lived car company that died well before its time. By the time it really became well-known, thanks to Back to the Future, the company was already bankrupt and gone. It was started in 1975 by John DeLorean, and defunct by 1982, just seven years later. Back to the Future came out in 1985.
Its most iconic car, the DMC DeLorean, or the DMC-12, which was featured in the film, was by all accounts not a very impressive car. It’s reached cult-like status today, and there are festivals showcasing old DMC-12s, but it wasn’t the speed demon it looked like (and was supposed to be). It also had an even shorter, more miserable existence with a production time of only 2 years (1981-1983).
But, maybe it’s time for DMC to make a comeback, and what better way than to come into the market with hot new electric vehicles?
The time is right. DMC could piggyback off the success of the Back to the Future franchise, they’ve already done something like it in 2010 (proof of concept), and they might be in the works to do it again.
The 1985 film Back to the Future was all about, well, the future. Electric vehicles are very much futuristic and adopting technology as quickly as it comes—autonomous driving, massive electric motors with huge horsepower, quicker charging times. You name it, and EVs are trying to use it.
What better way to capitalize on the success and cult status of a film than to release cars that are “futuristic” in quality? It just seems like a good idea, with millions of advertising possibilities.
If marketed right, a brand-new EV DMC vehicle could probably do well on the market, whether it’s as a sports car, sedan, or SUV/crossover.

Back in 2010, an all-electric one-off DeLorean DMC-12 was built for the 25th anniversary of Back to the Future’s original European release. Wired reports that the eCars Now! Italy helped make it happen—and the car ended up looking like it had an actual flux capacitor on it, but that’s just because EV technology wasn’t up to speed yet!
A turnkey electric car conversion kit was used on a DMC-12 that included a 1.21 jiggawatt (a comic term from the film) 90kW engine and custom-made Lithium-ion batteries that fit the car.
Fans loved it, of course, as it was paraded around in Italy. So, if some backwoods tuners can make a DMC-12 into an EV, couldn’t the company itself?
Of course they could. In fact, DeLorean’s current vice president has said that
