The rise of online automotive culture allows gearheads to daydream about building and driving their absolute dream cars. From drag strip tests between muscle cars and legit supercars to homemade restomods that can rival their modern counterparts in terms of performance, there’s something for everyone. Meanwhile, a host of content has also emerged as people explore what it might be like to live with a car that’s known as an absolute nightmare. The latter is certainly true in double for this video, which features two of the most tech-heavy, expensive, notoriously unreliable super sedans ever made, the Maserati Quattroporte and Volkswagen Phaeton, going out for top-speed runs at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

From the factory, few sedans could ever hope to live up to the Quattroporte or the Phaeton, both of which emerged in the early-2000s with massive powerplants and even more massive concerns. The Phaeton was the brainchild of Ferdinand Piech and famously featured an optional W12 engine under its hood, was a direct competitor to another VAG product in the Audi A8, and was overelaborate in every sense of the world, right down to trunk hinges that were built by Italian luxury bicycle component manufacturer Campagnolo.

Meanwhile, the Maserati Quattroporte was essentially a Ferrari with four doors, with one of Maranello’s V8 engines providing motivation and all the luxury amenities and style anyone could ever dream of. It offered advance features for the time, like adaptive suspension that most owners probably wished they could do without.

One fun detail about the Phaeton was that Piech stipulated it had to be able to drive at a speed of 186 miles per hour in 122-degree-Fahrenheit heat for 24 hours—all while keeping the interior at a cool 72 degrees. This despite the fact that the model was electronically limited to a top speed of 250 kilometers per hour, or just over 155 miles per hour. With that kind of obsession with detail, can a Phaeton or its Maserati counterpart actually survive a top speed run on the salt? Watch the vid to find out.
