In his latest review, Doug Demuro takes on the super-rare McLaren 675 LT supercar. While most of the cars from the house of McLaren seem pretty similar these days, this particular model is one of only 500 ever made and it has some interesting design elements that set it apart. What might surprise you is that just because LT stands for Long Tail doesn’t actually mean the car has a longer wheelbase.

The same reliable tried and true twin-turbo V8 is planted directly behind the driver of this 675LT. It’s fed in this case by that roof-scoop you see protruding out of the top of the vehicle. That option alone cost more than $40,000 and makes it one of less than 20 that were optioned with it. The physical length and wheelbase of the vehicle are also identical to the 650S that it’s based on. That’s a great foundation and it’s built with real finesse in a carbon tubbed chassis. What’s truly special about the 675LT is what’s different though.

While the car shares an engine and similar architecture with the 650S, some 50% of the components are upgraded and improved. This results in a higher horsepower output of 666. You’ll note the very sturdy P1 seats with 675LT stitching into the headrests. The 650S didn’t have such an option. While this car doesn’t have them, many LTs were also sold with P1 wheels too.

The transmission was upgraded to allow for quicker shifts resulting in a 0-60 mph time of just 2.9 seconds. That keeps it in close quarters with the 720S too. It stops quick too with gigantic carbon-ceramic brakes that can’t fade. In case they weren’t strong enough, the big spoiler in the back can act as an air-brake during especially hard braking events. It’s that longer wing that earns the 675 its namesake.

Unsurprisingly, Doug praises the telepathic steering of the 675LT. He compares it to the 911 GT3 RS in terms of where it falls in the McLaren lineup. A surprise that might be unexpected is just how that roof-scoop intake plays into the driving experience. Because of its integration into the cabin, drivers can hear the engine better than without it. It’s clear that McLaren meant for this car to be a serious track weapon. Over the years they’ve learned a boatload about how to go racing and it shows in the 675LT.
