Everybody knows about things that are made to be seen and heard, names such as Boss, Cobra Jet, Shelby, 5.0, etc instantly bring back memories of hard-charging Ford Performance Cars. However, there were certain oddities you are less likely to know about due to lower popularity, less promotion, or even secrecy.
Maybe you never knew that the most popular Big Block muscle cars from Ford weren’t the Boss, Cobrajet, SuperCobrajet series. Also, most people don’t know there were multiple 7-liter series engines available for the same car. We bring you 10 lesser-known interesting facts about Ford muscle cars.

Mercury did not always use rebadged Ford bodies, and many of their cars had entirely different body styles from Ford Muscle Cars. These models included cars like the: Comet, Marauder, Cyclone, Cougar, Parklane (yes this was a muscle car in Canada) to name a few. Some Mercury models were actually better performers than the same body/frame/engine combination available as a Ford.

The main reason for this was the Mercury, Edsel, and Lincoln production lines had the same number of employees in the powertrain assembly lines as their Ford counterparts which allowed more time to be spent on machining and assembly of individual actions due to the much lower volume of the higher-priced lines. It was significant enough that many old-timers would look for Mercury or Lincoln donor parts in wrecking yards given the choice between either or when building hot rods.

We aren’t talking about different power trims, we are talking about radically different engine assemblies that shared very limited parts and had as many differences as they did similarities. Among these include the: 430MEL, 427 Side Oiler-R code, 427 Top Oiler medium riser/high riser/low riser, SOHC 427, 427 Tunnel Port, 428 CobraJet/Interceptor, 429 ThunderJet/CobraJet, Boss 429.

Even stranger, the easiest way for a builder to get his hands on a rare 427 Side Oiler is to avoid one altogether and buy an old Chris Craft Boat that came with 427 Interceptor Engines detuned to 300 H.P. and drilled, tapped and machined for the cross-bolted main saddles, but the oil gallery was changed back to a standard top-oiler configuration. However, change a few parts and it was back to a side oiler (crankshaft bearing priority lubrication). Ford got Chris Craft to pick up the tooling cost of its high r.p.m. side oiler machining costs without ever letting them know.
