With it powerful ships and modern technology, the United States Navy is already a force to be reckoned with across the globe. Nonetheless, the U.S. Navy makes sure that when the time comes, it can cooperate smoothly and efficiently with other military forces. And this precept was amply demonstrated as the U.S. Navy recently held trilateral naval exercise in the Philippine Sea along with its Australian and Japanese allies.

For this tri-nation exercise between some of the major navies of the world, the U.S. Navy sent the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, led by its only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, the USS Ronald Reagan. The strike group was joined by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the Australian Defense Force (ADF).

Aside from the Nimitz-class carrier (ninth ship of her class), the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group also includes its embarked air wing Carrier Air Wing 5 (CVW 5) and two other ships: the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54) and the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89).

These ships are joined by the Japanese destroyer JS Teruzuki (DD 116) of the JMSDF, as well as by landing helicopter dock HMA Canberra (L02), guided missile destroyer HMAS Hobart (DDG 39), frigate HMAS Stuart (FFH 153), frigate HMAS Arunta (FFH 151), and fleet replenisher HMAS Sirius (O 266) of the ADF Joint Task Group.

During the trilateral naval exercises, participants operated and trained together – conducting integrated maritime operations in a war-fighting environment. Participants from each navy engaged in combined tasks to improve their interoperability and capabilities while enhancing levels of readiness to respond to any situation.

The U.S., Australia and Japan have been allies for a long time. This year, Japan and the U.S. are celebrating 60 years of their treaty of mutual cooperation and security. Naval exercises are already routine between these countries, as they help strengthen their mutual commitments to international maritime norms while boosting regional stability.
