Calling a vehicle a “girls’ car” is often seen as an insult to the vehicle in question – as well as an insult to modern women drivers who are more likely to buy SUVs and luxury cars than cute compacts.

Times have moved on since car manufacturers thought that the best way to attract women drivers was to make vehicles with matching accessories like rain capes and powder compacts. And although some female celebrities love their pink cars, your average women drivers would much rather drive something more understated.

Just because a vehicle has been described as a girls’ car doesn’t mean that it can’t be great fun to drive – whether you’re a man or a woman.

10 Chrysler PT Cruiser

The Chrysler PT Cruiser is a retro-styled compact car that looks as though it would be more at home in an animated cartoon. It is also available as a convertible, which manages to make the already unusual design look even stranger.

Sold between 2001 and 2010, the Chrysler PT Cruiser may have managed to divide motorists when it came to its design, but the vehicle itself was a commercial success both at home and abroad, and even won the North American Car of the Year award in 2001 from Car and Driver magazine.

First sold in 1938 the Volkswagen Beetle, known then as simply the Volkswagen Type 1, soon became a cultural icon, with more than 20 million models made by the time production came to an end in 2003. Although the traditional Beetle model was not really seen as a girls’ car, the New Beetle launched in 1997 definitely was.

While still borrowing heavily from the old Beetle, this New Beetle design was much curvier and more feminine, and there was even a Malibu Barbie New Beetle special edition made in 2010.

8 Ford Ka

The Ford Ka was launched as a city car in 1996 and has been marketed as a subcompact since a change to the vehicle’s design in 2016. Ford’s target market for the Ka was young, city-dwellers, though it did seem to appeal more to women than men.

Even the sporty hatch version, the SportKa wasn’t quite enough to dispel its image as a girls’ car. Nevertheless, the Ford Ka remains a fun and reliable get-around, and its compact size makes it an ideal option for maneuvering city streets and squeezing into parking bays.
