Did you ever think you’d see the day that a SUV would carry the famous ‘Mustang’ name? No, me neither. And yet, that’s just what Ford has decided to do, with the 2020 Mustang Mach-E.

SUV’s are rapidly becoming some of the most popular cars on the market, and with Ford now attempting to pivot into an electronic future, now could be the perfect time to make a version of their own.

However, that still doesn’t explain why Ford has landed on such a controversial name. So allow us to elaborate, with the real reason Ford decided to turn the Mustang into an SUV.

In the automotive industry, there’s no getting away from the fact that the future is very much a green one. For a company to survive and thrive in the current climate, they are going to have to evolve, and evolve fast. Therefore, Ford opted to introduce the Mach-E to the world with a very familiar name, increasing interest, and publicity in doing so. Electric cars will surely take a little while to get used to for some consumers, and so, this is a hint of familiarity that makes the transition a tiny bit easier.

Appealing to consumers emotions, rather than just their rationale, appears to be a key factor in Ford’s naming decision. As CNBC describes, the automotive giant is “betting the Mustang name will resonate with consumers”, where brand familiarity could initially prove crucial. This is certainly a high-risk strategy, as should the Mustang SUV turn out to be a commercial flop, it may very well damage its iconic brand value. Time will tell, as the project is still very much in its infancy. But with the vehicle reportedly set to be manufactured in Mexico – as opposing to the U.S, the pressure is already on domestically.

As was previously mentioned, the SUV market, particularly so in the U.S, is incredibly competitive. From entry-level models to luxury concepts, any manufacturer that wishes to enter the fray has to stand out in a very crowded field. This is where Ford can play its ace card, even if their model is otherwise unremarkable. The ‘Mustang’ name alone will attract attention, no matter how shortlived that proves to be.
