The U.S. Space Force hasn’t been around for a year and already the military division is scoping out new opportunities to involve private rocket builders. On Wednesday, Space Force agreed to a deal with the state of California to expand the potential for more launches to take place at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Here’s what the deal involves.

The U.S. Space Force’s 30th Space Wing currently runs Vandenberg, where private companies like Firefly and Relativity Space have set their eyes to launch rockets. And with the U.S. in the embryonic stages of a growing final frontier economy, California government officials couldn’t resist how that growth could help the state.
The space economy is seen by the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development as a way to spur growth in the central coast region of California. To that end, the government officially has a signed memorandum of understanding with the 30th Space Wing, financial consultants Deloitte, Cal Poly Tech University and Economic think tank REACH.

What is needed from the partners is a consolidated plan that reveals what’s needed for infrastructure, labor, financing and other facts that will provide all the resources needed by the U.S. Space Force, while putting California at the top of the commercial space industry.

“The spacelift industry requires an environment stimulated by opportunity,” said Col. Anthony Mastalir, 30th Space Wing commander. “Vandenberg Air Force Base is prepared to provide the technical support and insight so commercial providers can better navigate the challenges of working in the central coast,” he said.

Private investment has already reaped some dividends with the recent success of SpaceX’s Dragon Crew spacecraft which sent two astronauts to the International Space Station and back. Vandenberg has launched a dozen scientific and reconnaissance satellites since 1995, but its facilities have been silent since Jan 2019. A deal like this could help Vandenberg get back into the game and focus on missions other than recruiting horses to check out endangered wildlife on the base.
