Just a month ago, the United States Air Force awarded Boeing a $1.2-billion contract to build the first F-15EX planes to fill gaps in the military and replacing aging F-15C/Ds. It turned out, however, that the Air Force is also mulling to replace its F-15E Strike Eagle planes as well, according to a redacted F-15EX Justification and Approval (J&A) document. Let’s check out this latest news on the all-new, yet old, F-15EX.

As it stands, current F-15C/D fleet of the U.S. Air Force will soon run out of airframe flying hours, and an extensive would prove to be costly. This prompted the department to commence a program to replenish its aging fleet of F-15C/D with the much newer F-15EX planes.
According to the document, the U.S. Air Force doesn’t want to purchase new F-35 aircraft since transitioning to a different airframe and replacing existing air combat infrastructure would by costly and time-consuming. By foregoing an F-35 purchase and pursuing F-15EX acquisitions, the Air Force estimates savings of around $3 billion over its five-year Future Years Defense Program (FYDP).

While not yet final, the U.S. Air Force might also replace its F-15Es with the more capable F-15EX, the J&A document says. It sees the F-15EX purchase as the fastest way to refresh its capacity, update its capabilities and improve readiness. Likewise, only minimal transitional training is required due to the U.S. Air Force’s familiarity with F-15s. The biggest differences between the F-15EX and older siblings are engines, flight controls and displays.

The U.S Air Force’s FYDP calls for the purchase of 76 F-15EXs, while total orders could reach 144 aircraft. The first contract was for eight F-15EX for $1.2 billion – to be deployed to Eglin Air Force Base in Florida as test units — and the Air Force is requesting 12 more to be approved in the FY2021 budget.

At its best, the F-15EX is a 4.5 generation aircraft, as it lacks the stealthy nature and sensor fusion – characteristics of 5th gen aircraft like the F-35 — that would allow it to evade modern air defenses. However, it boasts a large weapons payload capacity thrice that of an F-35.
