Forester is one of the ten best Subaru models of the decade. Loyalists love them for their all-wheel drivetrain, unique boxer engines, reliability, and off-road capabilities. Originally founded in 1953, Subarus have been here since 1998. They have assembled their own set of fanatics in the states. A niche segment of buyers who are obsessed with them and don’t mind even if they are expensive or difficult to repair and maintain. In comparison to homegrown American cars, they cost an arm and a leg as they age; even if they cost several large less than the former, while new.
To be fair, Subaru has a number of rivals with comparatively similar performance, but, its reasonable price and AWD system gives it tons of advantage over them. It has something for every price group. The company has never disappointed its fans when it comes to efficiency or power. Although, most of these cars have been deemed expensive to maintain, which one is the most costly of them all? Apart from MSRP, the yearly maintenance, repair, and service also define how expensive a particular car is. The cost of ownership is determined from detailed studies, surveys, and owner satisfaction ratings.
Forester is considered the most expensive Subaru to maintain and repair. Outback is another model which closely follows Forester in this chase. Find out more about that below.
Forester behaves well in the early years and is one of the lowest priced cars to own, for the first five years. According to ConsumerReports surveys done on the ownership costs of different cars in the market, it was found out that a 3-year old average car costs $83 annually, a 5-year old one costs around $200 and as soon as it hits the 10-year mark, it started demanding upwards of a whopping $458. Similar studies on a Forester show that it costs around $267 at the five – year juncture and more than $500 after completing the 10th year. This five to ten years cost of ownership of Forester is much higher than its counterparts, almost on the same levels as luxury cars.
Although the model handles well with snow, mud, or dirt all thanks to their over 8 inches ground clearance and smaller overhangs, fuel economy is a gray area. Subarus are in general not very fuel efficient, and they tend to drink a lot of it. High diesel consumption and heavy body lead to larger emissions. Hence, they also tend to wear fast and have higher running costs. A 2010 model average fuel consumption is more than 36.5mpg.
