Fort Drum, NY, is home to the famed 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. And what they need is fuel, food, and ammunition to fight out on the battlefield. But if there is an issue with the roads, then the 427th Brigade Support Battalion can’t drive in those supplies with its trucks. So over four days, the 427th spent some time learning how to collect and load airdropped supplies, as part of their annual training at Fort Drum. Let’s see what those exercises looked like.

The soldiers took part in exercises to practice retrieving and loading the standard packages, with the container delivery system (CDS) being the main method to pack and parachute in whatever supplies the troops need. This would be absolutely vital in a battle situation, in which troops were stuck without the ability to call in supplies and nourishment via any form of road network, and perhaps with the added bonus of it minimizing the risk to life as well.

At the end of their training, an actual airdrop of supplies was flown in by the New York Air National Guard’s 109th Airlift Wing, with a stalwart C-130 Hercules being the aircraft that flew the supplies in. Using the CDS has only recently been added to the 427th’s essential task list, so this training will be absolutely vital.

Maj. William Hofmann, the 427th Brigade Support Battalion executive officer said “I use to do this a lot in the Airborne. But you don’t see it a lot in the non-airborne units. If the ground lines of communication are cut off, then that would be a situation where we could use the CDS”. All-terrain forklifts and trucks were used to collect the pallets as well as the C-130 Hercules to drop the pallets, with the 427th drilled to perfection to undertake the task of loading the pallets for transportation.
