Nobody could accuse Matt Farah of using the coronavirus pandemic as an excuse to slack off on his nonstop stream of One Take sports car reviews for The Smoking Tire. In recent weeks, Farah has gotten behind the wheel of Porsche’s new 911 Targa 4S and both of the 2021 variants of the Toyota GR Supra. Now, he’s gotten the opportunity to take a Lexus LC500 Convertible for a test drive on a sun-soaked run in the California hills. As usual, Matt starts the clip off with a quick rundown of the car’s styling and specs, before getting on the road to discover just how great of a car it might be.

With the LC500, Lexus has continued the styling cues that first entered the brand’s aesthetic in the form of the LFA supercar. While the LC500 isn’t quite as radical, it still slots in as a hardcore sports car with a unique exterior and a price tag that easily marches into the six-figure range—and it doesn’t get much better than being able to drop the top back on a summer day outside Los Angeles.

The knock against the LC500, which comes in multiple variants, has always been its curb weight. Maxed out with a hybrid-electric system complementing its internal combustion engine, curb weight can creep up towards a hefty 4,500 pounds. Luckily, as Matt points out, the hybrid LC500’s battery goes in the space where the convertible version’s top folds into, meaning that there simply can’t be one car that’s both hybrid and drop-top. And with a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that Lexus claims pumps out 471 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque, there’s no doubt internal combustion is the way to go here.

That powerplant helps the LC500 Convertible overcome its 126-pounds weight gain for the convertible’s addition, which still leaves the car lighter than the hybrid version. With a slick interior, Apple CarPlay, and a cloth top that retracts in only 15 seconds, what does Matt think of the LC500 Convertible? Well, after enjoying the lovely soundtrack of the V8, he discovers that the car warns him its 10-speed automatic transmission’s fluid has overheated. Still, Farah seems highly positive of the LC500 Convertible, especially for longterm owners who could end up with a future collectible.
