No two car companies represent ‘Britishness’ more than Jaguar and Aston Martin. The pair has been carrying the Union Jack flag internationally for decades, appearing in film, TV, and music in the process. They seemingly embody all that we would expect from a British car; class, elegance, and speed – all whilst retaining a distinctly retro feel.

Both companies have designed their fair share of iconic models. Aston Martin gave the world the DB5, the DB9, the Vantage, and the Vanquish. Jaguar, meanwhile, is responsible for the XKSS, the F-Type, the E-Type, and the unforgettable XJ220. Take your pick.

With that in mind, the task of crowning one as the face of the British motor industry is certainly not easy or straight forward. But that is just what we’re going to try and do.

Looking at today’s 2020 Jaguar line up, it might be hard to believe that the British manufacturer once produced some of the fastest cars the world has ever seen. The companies motor-racing heyday was throughout the 1950s, but four decades later, they surprisingly came back for more.

The legendary XJ220, introduced to the world in 1992, redefined peoples expectations of Jaguar.  The name is slightly misleading, as it maxed out at 212.3 mph, but that still made it the fastest production car in the world – until the McLaren F1’s emergence a few years later. This may not have been Jaguar as we knew it, but it put British cars back in map, at a time when Japanese models like the Mazda MX5 threatened to destroy the nation’s automotive industry.

Its lifespan and influence were shortlived, but in that limited space of time, it played a crucial role in re-establishing British cars on the world stage.

There have undoubtedly been peaks and troughs during the companies 98-year history. But for the vast majority of that time, Jaguar has managed to achieve a remarkable level of consistency in the quality of its car production. They may not always be the fastest available, but they do remain quintessentially stylish, and quintessentially Jaguar.

For the past seven years, the F-Type has been a shining example of this consistency. Always stylish, with each edition being marginally improved under the hood, never deviating away from what made the car successful in the first place. From the mid-1950s through to the modern-day, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Jaguar model that wasn’t wildly good-looking.
