We’ve seen drivers changing from one racing series to another countless times before. This includes some transitioning from NASCAR to IndyCar, which, while less travelled, has been completed by the likes of Danica Patrick. And yet, rarely have we ever seen a driver as successful as Jimmie Johnson in NASCAR choose to take the plunge into single-seater racing.

2020, for all of its craziness and misery, looks set to be the year that one of America’s greatest ever drivers tries his hand at IndyCar, fulfilling a lifelong ambition in the process. In a series of recent tests, Johnson has impressed in an IndyCar, a vehicle that is a far cry from the heavy, V8 monster the California native is more accustomed to.

Despite the obvious hurdles still to be overcome, here are just a few reasons why the 44-year-old looks set to join IndyCar, and why he could go on to become a big hit in the series next year.

Having retired from the series at the end of the 2020 season, he will surely go down as one of the greatest to ever race. IndyCar, therefore, will provide the driver with the perfect opportunity, and the perfect stage to prove this once and for all.

To prove that they know how to do more than simply race around an oval track, Johnson took to the tarmac in 2018 to drive a Formula One car. On the Bahrain International Circuit, the American did a car swap with F1 legend Fernando Alonso, taking a 2013 McLaren out for a spin in the process.

Johnson impressed with his pace in the F1 car, running Alonso’s fastest time fairly close – thereby demonstrating his racing credentials. Suffice to say, Johnson can more than hold his own on the race track  – as you can read about here. Should Johnson accomplish his goal of racing in single-seaters, he could follow in the footsteps of Alonso, who himself is currently striving for success in
