Generally speaking racing is a pretty clear sport when determining the winner – the first across the line is the fastest but once again IMSA sports car racing has turned in some surprising results that had to be amended after the race. Dakota Dickerson appeared to take his No. 54 MLT Motorsports Ligier JS P3 from fifth too first in a last lap that saw several cars drop off thanks to fuel issues. However, the lead #9 JDC MotorSports Norma M30 of Garry Kraut and Scott Andrews should have been shown the checkered a lap earlier.

Speaking after the race, Scott Andrews talked about the strategy. “We came into the race probably knowing we didn’t have the pace, so we had to do a risky and aggressive strategy on fuel if we had any chance to win. As far as strategy and teamwork and just the driving for both of us, I think we did a really awesome job collectively. I’m stoked. Two in a row is awesome. It’s not something we expected but we’re very grateful we have the opportunity to do it.” The team won a contentious race at Sebring two weeks ago.

Like most sports car racing, the length is determined by the clock rather than the number of laps. For Saturday’s event the race was scheduled for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Andrews had a substantial lead but was running low on fuel. In fuel saving mode he exceeded the lap time the IMSA prediction had made meaning that the clock had run out before the white flag, meaning the race was over on that lap.

Fuel issues created more chaos in the line up in the form of a technical infraction. The second place #74 driven by Schawb and Bronson was moved to the back of the standings after the car was found to exceed fuel capacity. Corey Lewis and Sheena Monk took GS honors in the afternoon’s IMSA Michelon Pilot Challenge in a McLaren 570s with TCR honors going to the Hyundai Veloster of Ryan Norman and Gabby Chavez.
