The Formula 1 race held at the Silverstone circuit in the UK over this past weekend was dubbed the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix and was, as F1 races go, an exciting and rather improbable event. Disregarding the silly name, what turned the race into a competitive and action-packed affair can be summarized in one word: “tires”. FIA’s decision to throw a monkey wrench into the tire selection on offer for the race compared to last weekend’s British Grand Prix seemed to have produced the desired effects, namely to spice up the competition and break up the status quo.

The weather for the Grand Prix weekend was warm and dry, and the softer compounds mandated by the sanctioning body as well as the requisite higher tire pressures following last week’s degradation issues truly altered the dynamics of the race. Amidst all this, the Red Bull team and their hotshoe Max Verstappen gambled on a tire strategy that saw the Dutchman stake his first win for the year, much to the chagrin of the mighty Mercedes team.
The rapidly-blistering Pirellis on the 2 silver arrows and Verstappen’s initial long stint on hard tires that saw him run twice the number of laps compared to his superior rivals all worked to the 22-year-old’s advantage . This, and his determination to push the pace in the pursuit of the Mercedes’ despite his team’s words of caution was enough to help him seal the victory. Hear their conversation for yourself here.
Beyond Red Bull’s coup, the talking points for the race surrounded Charles Leclerc’s sparkling 4th place finish in the difficult SF1000, and his Ferrari teammate Sebastian Vettel’s chalking up another miserable weekend, courtesy of a self-inflicted spin on the first lap as well as a questionable pit strategy courtesy of the Scuderia.
Nico Hulkenberg also truly shone and deserved the moniker “super-sub” with his strong performance in place of the Covid-afflicted Sergio Perez. All in all, it was one of the best races so far this season, and hopefully ushers in an era of rivalry for Red Bull in their quest to replace Mercedes from their lofty perch atop Formula 1.

Looking to next weekend’s Spanish GP at Barcelona where the forecast calls for continued warm and dry weather, Mercedes has to figure out how to overcome their tire issues, and the team is currently putting on a brave face by stating that they are “looking forward to the challenge”
