Doug Demuro Reviews World’s Most Expensive Sedan…The A-M Lagonda Taraf

Doug Demuro just had a chance to drive the Aston Martin Lagonda Taraf, which is the most expensive sedan ever produced. That’s saying quite a lot considering that a Rolls Royce Phantom starts at $455,000 before a single option or destination charge. In fact, the Lagonda Taraf, as Aston Martin would prefer us to call it, cost $1,000,000 when it was brand new. So how on earth did they manage to charge so much for a car with the exact same turn signal stalk as your Ford Focus?

What makes the Lagonda Taraf special is that it’s one of 120 ever made. In fact, this particular car is the only Taraf in all of North America. The name Taraf is Arabic for “Ultimate Luxury” and it was built to celebrate the brand’s 100th anniversary and never sold here.

It’s been imported under the show and display exemption and even received its own EPA rating when it arrived. Without that special exception, it wouldn’t have been allowed in the country. Doug makes it clear near the end of the video that frankly, the extra cost associated with the Taraf is entirely focused on two things, one of them being rarity.

That other major pricing factor is the overall beauty of the Taraf. Doug gives the sedan a 10/10 rating in terms of styling and it’s tough to disagree with him as you drink in all the details of the vehicle. Both the interior and exterior were artfully designed. The exterior design especially stands out from anything else on the road ever built. At 1.5 feet longer than the Rapide, the Taraf uses the same 6.0-liter V12 from the DB9 making 530 horsepower and shares much of its switchgear with the Rapide.

The seating, leather and small details are really where the Taraf stands apart from other cars from the marquee. It includes a bottle chiller between the rear seats, an umbrella in the rear, and a top speed of 195mph. It’s not all rosy though, some things detract from the car like the old-school and clunky Garmin Navigation system.

That Rapide DNA comes through strong in the driving style of the Taraf. The engine is strong and responsive but not wildly fast. The transmission and suspension aren’t sports-car quick or snappy but that’s intentional here. Aston Martin was intending this car to ooze luxury and it does that just fine. In fact, there’s some talk that the Lagonda line altogether may grow soon with a future EV or even SUV model. Whatever Aston wants to do with it, we can be sure it’ll stand apart from most every other brand.
