Burnouts: Almost everyone who’s into cars has at one point either done one, or watched one be done. The concept is simple, spin your rear tires while your front ones stay planted in order to heat up the rubber, and turn the tires into smoke.

While it is indeed a simple concept, and one that almost any RWD car can execute, Australia takes them far more seriously and does them better than any other county does, including America.

While that may seem shocking, Australia’s muscle car culture is as strong as America’s, with rowdy V8 muscle cars being beloved. Yet, that does nothing to demonstrate the actual insanity that is Australian burnouts, so read on and find out 10 reasons why Australians put the rest of the world to shame when it comes to shredding tires.

10 It’s An Official Motorsport

In North America, a burnout is simply an act of automotive hi-jinks, focused on just having fun with your car, and showing off a bit for anyone watching.

But, just like amateur track day racers have nothing on the pros, Australians take the concept of burnouts to a whole other level of impressive. Rather than just shredding tires with little care in the world, Aussies treat it like a legitimate motorsport, and as a result has become an officially recognized one down under.

Culminating in the Summernats Burnout Masters, Aussie burnout contests are not just some sloppy parking lot hooliganism, but instead, are officially sanctioned competitions that follow formal judging rules, leading to some of the best burnouts the car world has ever seen, and some of the most incredible cars purpose-built to simply shred their tires better than anyone else.

9 There’s A Strict Judging System

American burnouts are judged with only one criterion: how much you impressed your friends or the few spectators watching.

But, pulling off a successful burnout in a competition down under requires following a set of strict rules, and impressing a panel of judges in accordance with preset guidelines.

These rules are generally similar from event to event, following several factors like how fast you can get your tires to smoke, how much smoke you produced and how long it lasts, driving technique – including wall taps, and ending the burnout with your tires popped all contributing to your overall score. Most importantly though, if you stop the burnout for more than 5 seconds, or can’t last a full minute with the tires smoking – you lose points or are disqualified completely.
