Ford actually made two Boss 302 Mustang series. The first was based on the Mustang Mach 1 platform from 1969-70, differing only in the first year having 4 headlamps, the second year having 2 headlamps. These were SCCA 5.0L Trans-Am homologation specials based on the 351W powered Mach 1 platform but with a much higher-revving 5.0L engine with special cylinder heads, high compression, a long duration camshaft, and a mandatory 3.90- 4.10 limited-slip rear axle. Whereas the original Mach 1 wasn’t necessarily a performance car, the Boss 302 definitely was and was almost as fast as the 7-liter cars in most aspects.

The 2012-13 models were track-oriented Mustang GT cars that had very powerful DOHC 5.0L V8 engines with long-duration camshafts, special manifolds, recalibrated controls, a special torsion rear axle that allowed the car to handle much better around corners, complemented by an adjustable suspension. The real power of the original model was actually 315 H.P. at the wheels and the latter was 430+ H.P. at the wheels.

This model has all the options available for the time. Heavy-duty shocks, numerically high rear axle ration, rear window louver package, magnum 500 wheels, (reproduction) Goodyear Polyglass F60-15 tires, shaker hood scoop, front and rear spoiler package. This thing was fully loaded and born to run.

With 300 lbs less than the 390, 428, 429 that also came this year, the front end really went around corners better. Rated at 290 H.p., but really good for over 310 H.P., it wasn’t until you stepped up to the 390, and 428 engines that straight-line performance was better.

This model has a modified-standard (non-shaker) hood-scoop from the Mach 1 package. We love the fully modernized aftermarket wheels styled to look like vintage Magnum 500 Ford wheels that were optional on the Mustang. The 1969 model looked a little better than the 1970 model due to the quad headlamps and blacked out bezels around the outer lamps.

We actually like the deletion of the optional sport wing, which didn’t look as good as the factory dipped rear quarter and rear assembly that had a ducktail look built into them without a wing.

8 2021 Mustang Mach 1, Boss 5.2 Should Follow As An Option Soon

This one has the Boss 351 Mustang style Naca Duct Hood Scoops similar to the Buick GNX and the 1971 Mustang Mach1 with the Boss 351 package. Power comes from a cross-plane 5.0-liter engine based Coyote specs rated at 488 H.P. through a 6-speed stick or a 10-speed paddle shifter automatic, making it just slightly slower than a GT350.
