These days, the massive amount of information available online has given gearheads no excuse if they don’t go right ahead and build the exact car of their dreams. But as the world of forums and streaming videos becomes chock-full of wild builds ranging from Volvo inline-four powered, world record-holding pickup trucks to insane diesel-powered muscle cars, there’s still something great about a good-old-fashioned LS swap in a formerly underpowered sports car. Case in point comes now in the form of an awesome Datsun 280Z that popped up in the UK running quarter-miles in the 10-second range thanks to a turbocharged LSX under its long hood.

The long history of Datsun and Nissan Z-Cars can’t be truly understood without the extensive world of backyard tuners and modders who just love the chassis but understandably want more power. This 280Z, though, looks about as gnarly as possible. Built by owner Simon Holmes, who then brought the car from the United States to the United Kingdom, the matte green exterior lacks a bit of hood material over the engine bay, giving away the fact that something special is going on there.

With the rest of the hood removed, the massive powerplant can be viewed in its entirety. That mammoth V8 displaces 6.0 liters and has received an 80mm BorgWarner turbocharger and 1650cc injectors to get fuel in the chamber quickly enough to produce a claimed output of 870 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque.

That beef is routed to the rear wheels through a Tremec T56 six-speed stick shift, a Nissan R200 rear differential, and axles sourced from a Nissan 300ZX. The entire setup comes together with a low curb weight of 2,799 pounds to allow Holmes to run a 10.684-second quarter-mile at a trap speed of 149.12 miles per hour.
