The latest variant of the F-15 fourth-generation aircraft will soon be flying the skies along with the United States Air Force. This comes after the U.S. Air Force awarded Boeing a contract worth nearly $1.2 billion for a first lot of eight F-15EX fighter aircraft. Let’s take a look at this juicy military deal.

According to the contract, Boeing will design, develop, build, test and verify the new F-15EX aircraft. The $1.2-billion contract also includes spares, support equipment and training materials as well as technical data and support. The money allotted for the purchase of eight F-15EX aircraft — replacing the fleet’s oldest F-15C/D — was included in the fiscal year 2020 budget.

The U.S. Air Force is requesting 12 more to be approved in the FY2021 budget. Its five-year Future Years Defense Program calls for the purchase of 76 F-15EXs, while total orders could reach 144 aircraft. The first two F-15EXs will arrive in second quarter of FY2021, while the other six will be delivered in FY2023. The first eight F-15EX aircraft will be deployed to Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, serving as test units.

As the most advanced version of the F-15 so far, the F-15EX is more potent than other fourth-gen aircraft thanks to its fly-by-wire flight controls, new electronic warfare system, additional wing hardpoints and a new processor as well as its advanced cockpit and open mission systems. Boasting a large weapons payload capacity, it could launch hypersonic weapons with a max length of 22 feet and max weight of 7,000 lbs.

Since the F-15EX is more advanced than other fourth-gen platforms, it is sometimes called a “4.5-gen” aircraft. However, it’s still not on par with fifth-gen aircraft (F-35 and F-22) which stealth characteristics and sensor fusion allow them to best modern air defenses. The U.S. Air Force expects the F-15EX’s ability to operate near contested enemy airspace to last until 2028.

Nonetheless, the U.S. Air Force is pursuing the F-15EX as the most affordable and fastest way to refresh its capacity as well as update its capabilities. Since the platform requires minimal transitional training and possibly no infrastructure changes, the shift could be done in just months, instead of years.
