When a car is beyond salvaging – even one as legendary as a first-gen Mazda RX7 – it doesn’t seem so crazy to cast some of its parts into coins. This is exactly what the crew over at YouTube channel Adventures with Purpose did after hauling a RX7 out of a river in Oregon (believed to have been there for decades).

Since it’s not really worth trying to restore the car, it makes sense to think of a new use for its parts. The team removed various parts from the RX7, such as the oil cooler and radiator, and melted them down to make souvenir coins. Stamped on each of the coins is an image of the RX7 along with the text “Adventures with Purpose.”

Here’s how this Mazda RX7 went from sitting at the bottom of a river to becoming collectible hand-cast coins.

The Mazda RX7 was one of six vehicles found at the bottom of an Oregon river by the Adventures with Purpose crew. A video on its YouTube channel shows the team recovering the submerged vehicle using a tow truck. One challenge involved flipping the car over before the crew could pull it completely out of the water.

A few cheers went up once the car’s mud encrusted exterior peeked out of the surface. By the time the car emerged, the cabin was so full of water that openings underneath the doors kept pouring it out. The roof had a huge dent up top and the whole interior was in bad shape. It probably would have cost more to restore the car than it’s worth.

The next part of the process involved cleaning up and tearing apart the vehicle. First to come off was the tire cover trunk board and both doors, making the cabin easier to access. The door on the driver’s side was really stubborn and difficult to take off at first, requiring an electric saw and pry bar to set it free. Once the doors came off, the seats, carpet, and center console were soon to follow.

There’s something oddly satisfying about watching dirt get shoveled out of the car’s interior and seeing parts removed one at a time, even if the RX7 isn’t getting restored. If anything, it’s easier to come to terms with the RX7’s dismantling after seeing the full extent of its damage throughout the interior.

Using a backyard furnace, the team took the clean car parts from the RX7 and cast them into coins, or what the video’s description appropriately calls “pirate booty coins.” The team used RX7 parts made out of brass, aluminum, and copper to make the coins.

The Mazda RX7 continues to remain a beloved car today, in large part
