Mercedes is officially throwing down the gauntlet with regard to Tesla after learning from Porsche and its experiences with the Taycan. In a recent Daimler shareholder meeting, the company released a mindblowing statistic and some further details about their upcoming EQS fully electric car. It’s interesting to see them releasing such details this early too because typically a company would wait till just before production to announce such things. Let’s see what Mercedes has in store for the EQS, EV marketplace, and how they have Tesla in their crosshairs.

Something that we’ve known for a little while is how futuristic the inside of the EQS will be. Mercedes is making it of paramount concern to blow everyone out of the water in terms of future-proofing their EV lineup. Just as the S-Class has done for decades, the EQS is to be the flagship of the Mercedes EV lineup and feature the best tech that the brand has to offer. That’s a major departure from Tesla and its models.

The big change is that Tesla, while incredibly fast, and very chic, isn’t all that luxurious. In fact, it’s perhaps the biggest gripe among fans and critics alike. Mercedes is going to go so much further than Tesla that the insides of each car won’t really be comparable. The news from Mercedes now is that not only will they dominate in terms of luxury, but the EQS will have a range of 435 miles. For those taking notes, that’s more than any Tesla in production currently.

After watching the Porsche Taycan get a terrible EPA rating it’s clear that Mercedes is making sure they go far beyond the competition in terms of range. Mercedes says they’ll be able to reach 80% of that capacity in just 20 minutes to thanks to DC Fast Charging. So it’s going to drive at least as far as a Tesla if not further, and be much nicer inside for around $100,000. So it’s similarly priced to the Model S and the only thing it lacks is outright speed. While I may personally prefer speed over comfort, most customers in the market for one of these will be on the other side of that coin.

The 2021 EQS is coming soon and it’s looking very similar to the concept save for some of the more wild styling cues. Tesla has always seemed to struggle to meet deadlines but recently they seem to have gotten their delivery and production sorted out to a large degree. That doesn’t include the Cybertruck
