Ford has earned a ton of media coverage and fan hype with the recent official unveil of the new Bronco following months of rumors, spy shots, teasers, and testers. But business is just like war, and war is all about distraction, so Jeep has engaged in its own marketing campaign to try to silence a bit of the noise surrounding the Wrangler’s newest competitor. The result is that Jeep seems bit scared, if anything, given how desperate the timing seems, though there’s also plenty of reason to get amped up on new Wrangler and Gladiator prospects looming on the horizon. Sure, a V8-powered Rubicon 392 sounds great (and probably quite literally will sound great) but what about a Wrangler that will sound silent? Well, Jeep’s latest teaser hints at the off-road capability of the Wrangler 4xe, a hybrid-electric trail-runner, of all things.

The 15-second clip from Jeep shows the usual off-roading trails where Wrangler and Gladiators from Sahara to Rubicon and Mojave trim would usually blast around, spraying sand, dirt, and mud everywhere while making an unholy ruckus. Instead, the Wrangler 4xe’s electric power will allow it to creep through the wilderness in silence, allowing horses and other wildlife to remain blissfully unaware of the humans invading their environment. Following the 4xe’s in-person debut back in January, it would appear the plug-in should be hitting the market relatively soon.

Jeep’s website even has a page dedicated to collecting email addresses for fans interested in the forthcoming Wrangler 4xe, which does use the year 2021 for those interested in timing. The Consumer Electronic Show booth for the 4xe included Renegade and Compass models in 4xe trim, as well, though it’s safe to say the Gladiator pickup that shares so much with the Wrangler will probably receive a hybrid variant, as well, to go alongside its diesel counterpart. But keep in mind that plug-in versions of the Renegade and Compass sold in Europe only feature a 1.3-liter inline-four paired with an electric motor and producing 240 horses—not nearly enough for American consumers.
