Scuderia Ferrari, after having endured possibly one of the most painful races in its illustrious history at the Styrian Grandprix, was finally dealt some good news to start off its week. The FIA announced today that the Mugello circuit in Central Italy will host a round of Formula 1 World Championship in September. The Ferrari-owned track has never held an F1 race in its history, and will enter the record books as the location where Ferrari contested its 1,000th race, barring any unforeseen circumstances. The news could not have come at a better time for the Maranello outfit, reeling as they are from a devastating double DNF in Austria with their drivers coming together and laying waste to any hopes of testing their fast-tracked aero updates at a minimum.

Ferrari had petitioned the FIA for a chance to celebrate their millennial race at their own track, and now they have been granted their wish. It will be a truly monumental day for the Scuderia, and one can almost visualize the upcoming pomp and circumstance that will accompany all the proceedings, with the tifosi showing up in huge numbers to paint the circuit red, almost literally. However, that is only half the story. Now that Ferrari has invited the world to its home and is throwing a party for the ages, it must – more than ever before – deliver, and deliver big.

Ferrari’s struggles with the SF1000 have been well-documented, and the team realizes that they are on the cusp of writing off the entire 2020 season, even at this early juncture, unless a monumental turnaround is attained. If, on the other hand, the car’s shortcomings are found to be insurmountable in the context of making a race-winning and point grabbing machine that can live up the prodigious talents of its pilots, then Ferrari’s fortunes will likely be plummeting and its glorious name will be tarnished.

This is an opportunity for the scarlet cars to shine, and for Ferrari to show the world that their passion is not founded on mere dreams and they possess the machinery and wherewithal to deliver when the pressure is on. And there will be no greater pressure on them than there will be at Mugello. For the sake of Formula 1, even non-Ferrari fans should wish them well.
