In the past 5 decades, pickup trucks went from rugged workhorses to one of the most popular car segments in the world. And the Ford F-150 has been ruling the roost for multiple decades now. And there are many reasons for this: they are practical, relatively affordable, offer a lot of cargo space, and most of them have four-wheel drive, which means there is no place they cant go. Or is there?

Laymen will assume that, just because a vehicle has a larger ground clearance and a bed, it’s designed to go anywhere and everywhere off-road. This couldn’t be further from the truth, and there are many modern pickups who would struggle in even the mildest dirt road.

In this list, we separate the posers from true 4×4 off-road pickups by listing 5 you should never try to take off-road and 5 you’ll be unstoppable in.

10 Can’t Handle It – Fiat Toro

Fiat, the Italian brand well known for its economy city cars, revealed a medium-sized pick-up truck in 2016, what could have possibly gone wrong? For starters, the engine options: a 1.8 liter with 135 hp or a turbodiesel 1.8 with 170. Secondly, it’s okay if you want to take the Toro (Spanish for “bull” – not an accurate name, if you ask me), down a dirt road, but don’t expect more if you are an off-roader. The Toro can’t fit bigger wheels nor carry all the equipment, as it doesn’t have enough power. Moreover, in Argentina, Fiat has faced three class-action suits because of the malfunction of the six-speed manual transmission.

9 Unstoppable – VW Amaron ABT

Volkswagen had never built a pickup truck before, and that’s okay in Europe, where they are not very popular; but in South America, they were missing a huge portion of the market against the timeless Toyota Hilux and the mighty Ford Ranger. Well, in 2010, everything changed when VW presented the Amarok, with a ton of engines and body options, and it became one of the favorites in no time.

In 2017 VW shocked the market again releasing the Amarok V6, with 258 horsepower from a TDI engine. The German tuner ABT took this very capable vehicle and developed a software tune which gives the Amarok ABT an extra 50 horsepower. The Amarok is not just great for heavy-duty, but it is also a great off-roader vehicle, thanks to its power, the possibilities of fitting bigger wheels, and the AWD system.

8 Can’t Handle It – Renault Duster Oroch

The Renault Duster Oroch is based on the Renault Duster, a mid-size SUV very popular on the South American market. The top-of-the-line model, the Outsider Plus 4×4, has a 2 liter naturally-aspirated engine with 145 horsepower, that in a vehicle with that size and weight, feels more like 100 hp.

The six-speed manual transmission is not great either, as the gears are too short and it
