The WRX is a higher-spec version of the Subaru Impreza, sitting one rung below the all-out insanity that is the STI. While the first-generation Impreza could be had in front-wheel-drive format, the performance-oriented WRX has always come with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system that employs Torsen-style differentials to create proven, dependable traction in all driving scenarios.

The 2020 WRX’s four wheels are powered by a turbocharged flat-four Boxer engine that produces a peak of 268 horsepower at 5,600 RPM and a max of 258 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 RPM. That engine features in every trim and option level of the WRX, meaning that the next choice potential buyers have to make is between a six-speed manual gearbox or Subaru’s Sport Lineartronic continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). For enthusiasts, this is a clear choice—commuters, on the other hand, might reasonably opt for the slushbox and be forgiven. However, unlike many dual-clutch gearboxes on higher-end cars, the WRX still gets better fuel economy when equipped with a stick shift, earning an EPA rating of 21 city and 27 highway miles. The CVT is rated at 18 city and 24 highway miles.
